Break of structure & change of character
Reading the moment a trend actually ends — not just pauses.
Trends do not end because they are old, or extended, or because an oscillator says so. They end when the structure breaks: the pattern of higher highs and higher lows fails and the opposite pattern begins.
The reversal sequence
- Momentum fades — the last push to a new high is smaller, slower, on weaker volume than the legs before it.
- Change of character — the next pullback is suddenly sharp and deep, unlike the gentle pullbacks earlier in the trend.
- Break of structure — price takes out the last higher low. The uptrend definition has objectively failed.
- Confirmation — the first rally after the break stalls at a lower high. Sellers now defend; the roles have flipped.
One break is not a downtrend
A single break of a swing low ends the uptrend — it does not by itself start a downtrend. Markets often chop sideways after a break. Wait for the lower high to form before treating it as a trend in the other direction; the space between is transition, and transitions are for observing, not forcing. This sequence is fractal — it plays out identically on a 2-minute chart and a weekly chart. Practice spotting it in replay on the Arena where the outcome is hidden until you commit.
